You can get help from your public school system

Public schools are required under Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act to make “reasonable accommodations” for children who have a “functional impairment that substantially limits a major life activity.”  In other words, the act mandates special education services for any disability which limits a child’s ability to learn. Every school system has a 504 officer who is responsible for making sure the law is implemented correctly.

The most important element of public school help is the Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is a binding written contract of whom, when, and how special education services are to be delivered to your child. Mind Games recommends that parents be well prepared for their child’s IEP. You may have a knowledgeable advisor or advocate in attendance if you wish.

Teachers, counselors, principals, and school districts vary in their knowledge of learning disorders and their willingness to accommodate them. Some schools’ IEPs are not all that individualized. You should not sign an IEP until you are certain that the accommodations are right for your child.
